Shri Anil Kumar Sharma joined Indian Police Service in 1984 and was allotted Punjab Cadre. He superannuated on 31.07.2016, after distinguished professional career spanning over 32 years during which he served in Punjab, other parts of country and also abroad. During the period from 1986 to 1996, when Khalistan Movement was at its peak, he served as District Police Chief in various districts of Punjab i.e. Bathinda, Ferozepur, Amritsar (R), Ludhiana, Sangrur and Tarn Taran. Thereafter, on promotion as DIG he was posted as DIG/Litigation and then took over the assignment of DIG, Chief Minister’s Security in 2000. He proceeded on deputation to Cabinet Secretariat (R) and served there from 2000 to 2015. During the period he remained posted in Delhi, Amritsar, Kolkata, Port Louis (Mauritius) and Geneva (Switzerland). In 2015, he was promoted as Addl. Secretary while still in Cabinet Secretariat (R), New Delhi . He returned to Punjab in November 2015 on promotion as DGP, Intelligence, Punjab, Chandigarh where he remained posted till superannuation on 31.07.2016.
For his bravery and exemplary work, he was awarded with President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 1990, President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 2001 and President’s Police Medal for distinguished Services in 2008. He earned Appreciation Letters from President of India for discharge of onerous duties. In August 2016, soon after his retirement he was appointed as a member of Punjab State Commission for NRIs which is a statutory body and has its office at Chandigarh. His tenure ended in August 2020 . He is settled in Mohali , Punjab
