Surinder Kumar Mahajan is a distinguished Indian Badminton Coach and former National Level Player with more than four decades of experience in the sport. Born on February 10, 1954, he graduated from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and earned his NIS Coaching qualification in 1978-79, securing the top position in his batch. He also completed the International Badminton Federation (IBF) coaching course, which has further enhanced his credentials as one of India’s elite Badminton Coach.
His early career as a player was marked by repeated victories at the state level and participation in various National Tournaments. Transitioning into coaching, Mahajan dedicated over 30 years to training players including 26 years of service with the Sports Authority of India. As National Coach he has accompanied the Indian Badminton Team to prestigious events such as Asian Badminton Championships, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships, where Indian Teams and players achieved significant success and won medal under his guidance.
Beyond India, Mahajan’s expertise gained International recognition. He conducted Coaching assignments in Europe, training players in the Czech Republic and Austria over a decade-long engagement. His innovative approach to Coaching led him to invent the multi-shuttle machine, now widely used both in India and abroad. He also authored globally appreciated book titled “Modern Trends and training in Badminton” which highlights advanced methodologies and professional insights into the sport.


Mahajan has played an influential role in nurturing India’s next generation of Badminton Champions. Young talents such as Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu trained under his supervision during junior camp in Chandigarh, preparing for global competitions like the Commonwealth Youth Games and World Championships. His leadership extended to Administrative and Institution roles, having served as Chief Coach at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala for three years.
Presently based in Chandigarh and Mohali, Surinder Mahajan continuous to train elite National and International level players while contributing to India’s evolving Badminton ecosystem. His lifelong dedication reflects a perfect blend of technical mastery, innovative thinking, and mentorship, making him India’s one of the most respected figures in Badminton Coaching and development.
