Lt Gen (Retd) JP Singh is a third generation army officer. Commissioned in the Armoured Corps in June 1971. He took part in combat action on the Western front in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
In his 40 years of active service, the General has served all over the country and abroad in various command, staff and instructional assignments. The officer has commanded an Armoured Division, Armoured Corps Centre and School and the largest Strike Corps. An ardent practioner of maneuver warfare, he is regarded as a leading thinker on impact of future technologies, net enablement of armed forces, Operational Art and capability development through indigenous defense industrial base. He was a leading member of the IA Transformational Study.
The General is a post graduate in Military Sciences and double M’Phil in Strategic Studies and Higher Defense Management. He has attended the Staff College, Senior and Higher Command Courses and the NDC course. He has taught the students in DSSC India and led the team to Zambia under ITEC to teach students of nine Southern African countries for two years in Zambian Command and Staff College.


The officer was the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defense Staff (Perspective Planning and Force Development) in the Integrated Defence Staff and thereafter Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Planning and Systems) before he superannuated. In these appointments, he was administrating the Armed Forces Capability Development Strategy, Long Term Perspective Plans, Financial Planning and all Capital Acquisitions. He was also the Secretary of the Defense Acquisition Council. The officer represented the Army in all interactions with the Parliamentary Committee for Defence for three years.
After over 40 years of distinguished service in the Army, the Ministry of Defense immediately appointed the General as the Chief Advisor to the Defense Research and Defense Organisation (DRDO). In this assignment, the General oversaw major projects, which have a defining impact in building indigenous defense capabilities and capacities. The officer has been a part of numerous Committees set up by the MoD to fast track indigenization, improve Quality Control and audit Ordnance Factories and Defence Public Sector Units. He was also an Independent Director in leading Private Sector undertaking. The officer is a strong protagonist of Civil-Military Fusion.
The General is the military advisor to a leading magazine on strategic affairs and visiting fellow at Vivekananda International Foundation. The officers views on future security threats, net assessment of various scenarios, global chains, higher defense management, building indigenous defense industrial base have been published and expressed in national and international seminars.
For his exemplary service, he was awarded twice by the President of India.
