Prof. Pushpinder Syal

Prof. Pushpinder Syal is a distinguished scholar and retired Professor from the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. An alumna of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and the University of Lancaster, U.K., she holds degrees in English (B.A. Hons., M.A., M.Phil.) and a Ph.D. in Linguistics. Her academic excellence has been recognized with several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship, the Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship, and the Australia–India Council Fellowship. During her illustrious career spanning over four decades, Prof. Syal made pioneering contributions to the fields of Linguistics, Language Teaching, Stylistics, and New Literatures in English. She served as Chairperson of her department and later as Director at the Lucknow Campus of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), where she initiated several academic and cultural programs in collaboration with international institutions such as the British Council and the American Centre. She also served as Advisor and Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University. Prof. Syal has conducted numerous teacher-training and communication workshops nationwide, including programs for CII, Hindustan Lever, DAV Schools, and the Bhakra-Beas Management Board. She has also been a certified IELTS examiner with the British Council for over 15 years. Her research and publications include more than 50 papers and several acclaimed books, notably Style and Structure in Commonwealth Literature (1994), Introduction to Linguistics (1997), and co-edited volumes such as Cultural Studies in the Indian Context (Routledge, 2015) and Dialogue Across Languages (Panjab University Press, 2016). She has guided around 30 Ph.D. and M.Phil. dissertations and continues to contribute to academic discourse through editorial and advisory roles for reputed journals and universities across India. A translator, creative writer, and scholar of exceptional depth, Prof. Pushpinder Syal embodies the spirit of intellectual rigor and cultural engagement, leaving an enduring legacy in the domains of English studies and applied linguistics.
