Chandigarh Must Move Beyond ‘Transit City’ Tag: Experts
Chandigarh, 13 February 2026:
The University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (UIHTM), Panjab University, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Institute for Transformation and Chandigarh Citizens Foundation, organized a Tourism Stakeholder Consultation at the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall to chart a new roadmap for the city’s tourism growth.
The consultation, themed “Enhancing Tourism in Chandigarh: Beyond its Current Status as a Transit City,” brought together administrators, policymakers, tourism professionals, and academicians to deliberate on repositioning Chandigarh as a high-value urban destination.
Prof. Yojna Rawat, Dean of University Instructions, emphasized transforming Chandigarh’s iconic architecture and planned urban identity into curated experiential tourism. Prof. Meenakshi Goyal highlighted the importance of research-backed, data-driven tourism planning.
Ms. Radhika, Director Tourism, Chandigarh Administration, stressed infrastructure upgradation, event-based promotion, and strategic branding to attract premium visitor segments.
Experts recommended developing thematic circuits in architectural, sports, wellness, medical, health, and MICE tourism, leveraging the city’s strengths in urban design, convention facilities, and healthcare.
The consultation concluded with a clear consensus: Chandigarh must strategically reposition itself from a transit stop to a branded, high-value tourism destination.
