Profile

  • Retired as Prof. & Head, Department of Geography, D A V College, Sector 10D,
    Chandigarh in 2023. Taught Geography for 36 years in this prestigious institute starting from 1987.
  • Was member of Board of Studies of Geography, Punjab University, Chandigarh, from 2008 to 2020.
  • Authored 7 text books for Under Graduate Geography classes.
  • Published 11 research papers in National and Internation Journals of repute regarding Environment, Urbanisation, Cultural Geography, Ecological Niches and Habitat Destruction.
  • Set up the first Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Lab in any College in Chandigarh and introduced elementary GIS before PU put it in the syllabus. In 2019, I converted the Geography lecture theaters in to state of the art, air conditioned Digital Classrooms and initiated creation of digitised resources for students in the wake of Pandemic.
  • Presently creating free online Geography Lectures and Resources in Hindi for students of Classes 11,12 and BA. It is an ongoing project.
  • Taught 3 specialised papers on (i) Urban Geography, Design and Settling of Chandigarh, (ii) Environmental Geography (I have also Authored a Text book on this Topic), and (iii) Rural Settlement Geography to students of BA Geography Honours. The last paper dealt with the rural settlements in the Siwalik Hills between Rivers Ghaggar and Sutlej. This paper dealt with the culture, ecology, economy and population dynamics of this region which falls with in the service area of Chandigarh.
  • An avid photographer – have catalogued many heritage buildings as well as trees of Chandigarh and its environs.
  • Have been the President of Chandigarh Bird Club from 2015 to 2023, along with being the editor of the Club Newsletter “Whispering Wings” from 2015 to 2023. This Newsletter is widely accepted in National & International Birdwatching Communities as well as Bombay Natural History Society.
  • Honorary Wildlife Warden, Punjab, from 2017 to 2020.
  • Member of the Wildlife Advisory Board, Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2017 to 2019.
  • Participated in many Government organised annual Bird Counts in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Uttrakhand.
  • Have organised many annual Bird Counts of Migratory Birds in Sukhna Lake and other water bodies around Chandigarh, which have become a norm now. The data is used by Forest Department, UT Chandigarh for its records and studies.
  • Chandigarh Bird Club published a book on ‘Birds of Chandigarh’ during my tenure as President of the Club as well as the member of the Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Forest Department.
